Fishing Gifts for Men

He's had the novelty mug and the sign for the shed, so this year, give him a print of a fish he caught himself. If you can't get the photo, there's a plate for whatever he fishes for.

Start with what he fishes for

A carp man and a fly man want different pictures. Not sure? Ask his mates. A carp angler will want a mirror or a common, so start with our carp prints. A predator angler will want a pike.

If he spends weekends on a river with a fly rod, look at trout and salmon prints. If he's on the beach in a storm, it's sea fish.

How to tell what he's into

Listen to the words. A carp angler talks about lumps and doubles. Angling Times notes that a double, or a Barney Rubble, is any fish of 10lb or more. A match angler talks about weights and pegs, while a fly angler talks about hatches, rivers and the fly that finally worked.

Check his camera roll if you can, because the fish he photographs most is the fish he'd want on the wall.

His best fish, printed

He'll have a photo he's shown everyone. Get the original file, not the version he posted, because social media shrinks it. Then print it as it is, or see it in a house style first with a free preview that lets you check the fish.

Know the fish? Check its scales. He will. Our catch photo guide explains which shots print best.

Fishing gifts for men by budget

Under £20

A mug for the van, or an A4 poster for the shed wall where he keeps the rods and the bait fridge.

£20 to £50

A larger poster he can frame himself, or a small canvas at 30x40 cm for a desk or a shelf.

A bigger present

A framed print or framed canvas of his PB. That stays up for years.

Gifts that aren't prints

Something for the bank? Keep it simple. A good flask gets used. So does a decent head torch. Leave rods, reels and bait to him: tackle is personal, and he'll have opinions.

A day with a licensed coach on a new water is another option, and the Angling Trust lists coaches on its Get Fishing map. If he's never tried fly fishing, a lesson is a present he won't have booked himself.

Where it'll hang

A shed, a garage or a tackle room can be damp, and damp doesn't suit paper or canvas. If that's where he'd want it, buy a mug. For a study, a hallway or a den, an A3 framed print, holding a 297 x 420 mm print, is a good middle size. Our print sizes guide has the rest, with every size in millimetres.

For a match angler

Match anglers count weight, not single fish. Their proudest photo is often a team shot or a net of fish on the scales at the end of a match. Those print well as they are. Keep everyone in. Check the crop before you approve it. If he fishes rivers in winter, a roach or chub plate from the collection suits him too.

Christmas and Father's Day

See Christmas fishing gifts for order-by dates once they're set, or fishing gifts for dad for Father's Day. River coarse fishing reopens in mid June, so a river fish lands well in Father's Day week. For a wider list, see all our fishing gifts. A styled print takes a few days longer than a photo printed as it is, because you'll want time to compare previews.

Questions, answered

What's a good fishing gift for a man who has everything?
A print of his own catch. He can't have bought it, and it won't clash with the tackle he's already chosen.
Which size print should I buy him?
A3 framed suits a study, a shed or a hallway. For a big wall, go to 50x70 cm. Our print sizes guide has the measurements.
